We will be discussing the newly released "Being Aro: A Collection of Aromantic Fiction about Love, Connection, and Empowerment" which is an aromantic fiction anthology that has been compiled and edited by Madeline Dyer and Rosiee Thor.
This is a companion to their previously released "Being Ace: An Anthology of Queer, Trans, Femme, and Disabled Stories of Asexual Love and Connection" and if people wish to compare the stories, we can, but the focus will be on "Being Aro".
π³οΈβπ Feel free to share with anyone who is under the Aromantic umbrella, questioning, or who connects with this discussion whether they officially identify as Aro or not (common threads might be pressure to marry, expectations to be in romantic relationships, assumptions about the ways in which they are queer, people who have prioritized work/school/etc over developing friendships/relationships etc) as we will be discussing how we connect (or don't) to the stories chosen!
π Look for this book at your local library, on Libby, or at a bookstore near you!
π While it is awesome if you can read some of the short stories beforehand, we will come with some prepared passages and discussion questions if we need to start with common ground. So please, do not worry about not being able to read it in time, we would still love to have you join us! :)
π½ UPDATE: We will be meeting at Snow Park in Oakland (Harrison St & 19th St, Lakeside Dr, Oakland, CA 94612) starting at noon. This is a couple blocks away from the 19th Street BART Station (orange or red line). This location has bathrooms, is pet friendly, and has a playground in case you are bringing little ones and they need something to do. There is metered parking and some free street parking in the immediate vicinity but most are limited to 2 hrs during the time we are there. You can check out SpotAngels for parking information if you choose to drive. We might choose to go for boba/ice cream/food/etc afterwards if people are interested! I will get there early on Saturday and stake out a spot with shade and then update this post and the Discord so you know exactly how to find us.
πBring a jacket, sunscreen, and whatever other park going supplies you would like to be comfortable while we chat outdoors :)
