About us

On 4/7/26, this group changed hands and is now organized by Fork in the Path, an outdoor school for the adventurous of all ages interested in wild food foraging, such as mushrooms, plants, seaweed, acorns, sea urchin mussels, and more. Most events are within a 3-hour drive or less from the Bay Area. While our classes are listed on Meetup, all registrations must go through our website, www.forkinthepath.org
Most of our events are family-friendly, and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

    #### What You'll Learn

This experiential, hands-on half-day program is all about the fascinating world of Mount Shasta fungi and begins at 10:00 am. Learning to forage for mushrooms is an ongoing life path. In this program, Mikhael will teach you foundational skills to be able to go out foraging on your own. We will cover mushroom anatomy for identification, symbiotic tree and plant relationships, poisonous and edible mushrooms, and forest safety. In Mount Shasta in the spring and summer, it is possible to find edibles such as morels, spring porcini, butter boletes, and more. The program also includes community building, mindful movement, a cooking demo, and a tasting at the end.
On May 9/10, Mikhael will be joined by special guest Noodle, the Scent Trained Dog, and her human, Egg, for a special class on mushroom hunting with a canine companion and training them to find mushrooms. Cuteness abounds! (Please note: only Noodle is the only dog we can allow at this class to make sure she can focus.)

    #### Where

Mount Shasta area. Exact location provided with registration. You can get lodging or camp in the Mount Shasta or Dunsmuir area. Please plan to drive up to an additional hour in carpools from our meeting point to where the mushrooms are, they move around as conditions change! We scout extensively and will do our best to set you up for success and take you to them. We recommend staying at Hestia Magic Retreat Center if you’re coming from out of the area.

    Instructor
Mikhael Crystallah-Selk is a leading mushroom identifier in California with more than a decade of experience foraging and studying the taxonomy of fungi. He is on the board of SOMA mycological association and is a group expert and moderator of some of the largest online mushroom groups. He is also an active volunteer with the International Poison Emergency Group as a mushroom identifier. He leads the identification tables at many of the Northern California mushroom events and leads guided mushroom walks around NorCal.

    Pricing
Our pricing is sliding scale $75-$125 per adult with scholarships available. Kids are welcome too!

    #### What You'll Learn

This experiential, hands-on half-day foraging class is all about the fascinating world of Sierra Nevada fungi and plants. We’ll be targeting morels and porcini, and learning about all the vibrant montane ecology around us along the way. We’ll explain what happens in the forest after a fire, both ecologically and from a human management perspective. We’ll cover mushroom and plant anatomy for identification, mycorrhizal relationships (fungal- tree/plant partnerships at the mycelial/root level), poisonous and edible mushrooms, and forest safety. Find the mythical “fairy fart” mushroom, the gorgeous purple cup fungi, and more! The program also includes ethics of harvesting, community building, mindful movement, a cooking demo, and a tasting at the end. Learning to forage for mushrooms is an ongoing life path. This program will teach you the foundational skills to go out foraging on your own.

    #### Where and When

Dates are individual classes, not a series, all 10am-3pm
    May 2, 3, 9, 10, in Eldorado National Forest
May 16, 17, 30, 31 in either Eldorado National Forest or Tahoe National Forest (pending conditions)
Exact meetup location is provided one week before your class date. Please note, of all the places where we offer mushroom foraging classes, the mountains are the most variable and hardest to predict. While we can’t guarantee exactly what we’ll find, we want to make our best effort to set you up for success, so, depending on conditions, our May classes will be in either El Dorado or Tahoe National Forest. We will be updating as we have more information on conditions.

    Pricing
Our pricing is sliding scale $55-$175 with scholarships available. Kids are welcome too!
