Details
Join us February 21 for an evening of talks around distributed systems and in-memory computing! As usual, our free meetup will include food, beverages and cool raffle prizes.
We'll be gathering in Santa Clara's famed "Building 54" (well, it's not really famous) at 3350 Scott Blvd (just off Highway 101) in the heart of Silicon Valley. Two fantastic speakers are lined up. Let's take a look....
> First speaker: Eden Kim, Chair of the SNIA Solid State Storage Technical Work Group and CEO at Calypso Systems, will present a talk titled: "Real World Workloads and In Memory Performance." Eden's discussion will compare Real World Data Center Workloads between NVMe SSD block IO and NVDIMM-N Byte Addressable load-store.
> Second speaker: Valentin "Val" Kulichenko, lead architect at GridGain Systems, will then deliver a talk titled: "Building consistent and highly available distributed systems with Apache Ignite and GridGain."
> Third speaker: Oracle TimesTen Product Manager Doug Hood's talk is titled: "Distributed SQL Tuning for TimesTen Scaleout - the fastest OLTP database"
>> Raffle prizes! <<
1st Prize: Vilros Raspberry Pi 3 Retro Arcade Gaming Kit with 2 Classic USB Gamepads (Nintendo-style) WITH pre-loaded (with games) 32GB Samsung EVO card.
2nd Prize: Fire 7 Tablet with Alexa, 7" Display, 8 GB, Black

> Talk one: "Real World Workloads and In Memory Performance"
Abstract: This talk will present a comparison of performance between NVMe SSD Block IO and NVDIMM-N PM using synthetic and real world workloads. Workloads will include synthetic RND 4K W benchmarks, synthetic SQL RND 8K RW65 workloads and a real world SQL datacenter workload from a Retail web portal.
The learning objectives are to examine the composition of different synthetic and real world workloads and to understand how the performance of these different workloads vary between NVMe SSD Block IO and byte addressable NVDIMM-N Persistent Memory load-store.
> Talk two: "Building consistent and highly available distributed systems with Apache Ignite and GridGain"
Abstract: It is well known that there is a tradeoff between data consistency and high availability. However, there are many applications that require very strong consistency guarantees, and making such applications highly available can be a significant challenge.
In this session, meetup attendees will be given an overview of Apache® Ignite™ and GridGain capabilities that allow the delivery of high availability, while not breaking data consistency. Specific guidelines will be presented on how to build such systems covering topics such as:
• In-memory backups
• Data persistence
• Data center replication
• Full and incremental snapshots.
At the end of this session, attendees will have better understanding of how Apache Ignite and GridGain work, and how to use different features of these products to build applications that are both consistent and highly available.
> Talk three: Distributed SQL Tuning for TimesTen Scaleout - the fastest OLTP database
TimesTen Scaleout is a scale-out, shared nothing SQL RDBMS, but you still need to tune it. Although existing 'non-scale out' TimesTen SQL will work unchanged, it may not be optimal. Find out how to use instances, distribution clauses, PK, FK, indexes and MVs to your advantage for OLTP and analytic workloads.
About the speakers:
Eden CEO of Calypso Systems, Inc., a leader in SSD test and measurement equipment and services. He is also Chair of the SNIA Solid State Storage Technical Working Group. Eden has been leading the research into Real World Storage Workloads over the past several years through the SSS TWG technical works programs, work with leading Datacenter customers and through efforts in developing the IOProfiler toolset and TestMyWorkload.com website.
Val is a software engineer, solution architect and distributed systems enthusiast. He is committer and PMC member of Apache Ignite project, his constant contributions are aimed to improve quality of the product and user experience for those working with it. Val is Lead Architect at GridGain Systems where his main goal is to help customers and partners with their technical challenges.
Doug is an Oracle TimesTen Cloud Product Manager. His technical interests are making things go fast [OCI, ODBC and PLSQL] and getting things to work together. His focus today is on Oracle TimesTen Velocity Scale. Velocity Scale is a shared nothing, scale out, In-Memory RDBMS based on TimesTen.
