Consumers and industry have a new target… the Human Microbiome! “The human microbiome, is the study of 100 trillion bacteria that live in our bodies – that’s ten germs for every human cell. This mix of good and bad bacteria have been linked to everything from infectious diseases like clostridium difficile to obesity and even mental health.” Johnson and Johnson recently formed a partnership with Whole Biome.. which shifted this arena from R&D projects into real targets for pharmaceuticals and business opportunities alike.
Novel companies are sprouting up in this space. Specifically, they are creating therapies that alter the microbiome for human health or help better gain insights into why patients response better to certain therapies than others.
Peter DiLaura, CEO of Second Genome says that “We now have a capacity we never had before to interrogate and understand this really complex population of bacteria and how this bacteria interact with the host — the human biology,” Come join HealthTech Women on April 21st to experience and learn about this shift from science to reality! Watch the TED talk here on your microbiome by Rob Knight. Additional Resources:
