Intelligent Tutoring Tutoring Successes
Abstract
This talk will describe bringing research in Intelligent Turoring Systems to a successful sixteen-week course for IT administration. Our strategy was to have the world’s best experts at teaching IT Administration tutor students one-on-one and then write computer programs that mimic their teaching behavior. In tests run by IDA, graduates using the system out-performed expert Navy ITs with 10 years’ experience in tests of fixing real system problems. One of the areas required to make the Tutor successful was User Experience and User Interfaces. We will discuss examples of where and how UI/UX knowledge was critical to the success of the Tutor.
Bio
Richard holds a BS in Mathematics from Caltech and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the UC Irvine.
While a graduate student he collaborated with Dr. John Seely Brown exploring ways of using computers to improve education. Richard then worked with Dr. Brown at Bolt, Beranek, and Newman developing seminal artificial intelligence-based tutoring systems in the fields of electronic troubleshooting (SOPHIE), basic logical thinking (BLOCKS), and mathematics (WEST, BUGGY and DEBUGGY).
Richard moved to Xerox PARC where he managed the User Systems Research Group guiding two dozen researchers advancing all aspects of human-computer interaction. After running his own consulting business, Richard returned to PARC to Manage the Distributed Systems Area.
In 2004, Richard joined Acuitus, Inc. Over the next 18 years, the team produced the DARPA Digital Tutor, a 16-week course in network and computer systems administration taught primarily by computer that teaches US Navy recruits to achieve a level of expertise comparable to ITs with ten years of experience.
Richard is now working with Exquisitive to transform K-12 math education.
