TOPHATs Places of Pride, The ArQuives, and a bit of the Hair of the Dog
The Aquives, 34 Isabella Street, Toronto, ON, CAJoin Lawrence, you top hatted host, as we discover some of the key locations of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Toronto. As a queer ally, I have wanted to include a walk that covers some of the historic location in our Gay Village.
We will begin our adventure at The ArQuives, to see an exhibit The Wild and The Weeds, about Hanlan’s Point Beach is positioned as more than the site of the 1971 Gay Day Picnic.

Then we will head over to the Foy House, a queer art gallery, owned by Georgia W. This heritage building, has survived the wrecking ball of gentrification, and hosts a monthly gayming event.

Our walk continues past the The Home Children Plaque
Beginning in 1869, British charitable societies removed children from slums and orphanages in congested industrial cities and brought them to Canada to serve as cheap farm and domestic labour.

Our next stop is the AIDS memorial in Barbara Hall Park.

Next stop is the 519 Community Centre. For fifty years, The 519 has been a place where community gathers, organizes, celebrates, and shows up for one another. It’s a place to imagine something better.
August 15-22, they will host an exhibition of their

Then we will head past the former location of Glad Day Bookshop. Opened in 1970 by Jearld Moldenhauer, it was the city's and Canada's first bookstore targeted to the gay community.

No queer walk is complete without going to City Park Apartments, the apartment complex was vital to the development of the Church–Wellesley Village in the 1950s.
