Loughcrew / Sliabh na Callaigh, Co Meath

Details
Grade: Easy, with a short climb to the top of Sliabh na Callaigh
At only 74 miles from Belfast, this is a nice day trip to Kells, County Meath to visit Loughcrew’s Ancient Passage Tombs and Loughcrew Gardens.
These tombs are over 5,000 years old which makes them older than Newgrange. Hear about the legend of the witch who is credited for these tombs, sit on her throne and take in the breath-taking scenery from the highest point in County Meath.
Upon entering the tomb you will see some amazing carvings all along the passage. Follow the path of the Equinox's sunlight to see the spectacular carved stone that the sun strikes twice a year. Look up at the corbeled roof that has kept this structure intact for thousands of year as you gaze at the mysterious art that our ancestors worked immensely to create.
After walking around and exploring the cairns and taking in the stunning views, we can decide what to do next:
- we can to Loughcrew Gardens at the bottom of the hill and walk around the trail and walled gardens. Loughcrew dates back to the 17th century and the birthplace of Saint Oliver Plunkett. We can then go for a well earned coffee/lunch at the coffee shop.
- we can go for a longer walk at which is the largest planted beech forest in Ireland, it also has Sitka spruce, Scots pine and noble fir and a very interesting native tree collection. There are magnificent views across Lough Sheelin from the trails.
Trail shoes/walking boots and bring a rain jacket just in case. Bring something to drink and a snack/packed lunch, though there are 2 good coffee shops here so we have options.
Post up if you need a lift with a driver going from your area. All passengers - please be mindful of the sharp rise in petrol prices. Drivers please take passenger donations so that all is equal for everyone.
This walk costs £6 for non-members, £1 for members who have paid their £20 yearly fee.
See you there!
