Grade: Easy

Hillsborough Forest is a lovely location for a nice, easy walk. It’s easy to reach and if there's a little light rain, there's plenty of cover in the forest.

The lakeside and forest paths give us a choice of routes and the forest is especially beautiful in winter, with a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

Our walk will take in the main lake trail, offering views across the water, small islands and the restored paths. The mixed woodland includes beech, oak and conifers. Depending on the season we may spot resident birdlife, ducks, swans and even the occasional deer deeper in the trees. The more recently planted areas and small wetland sections attract a wider variety of birds, so there is usually something to see.

The full loop around the lake generally takes around 90 minutes, depending on pace and any short detours we choose to include to bring it up to 2 hours. Most of the trail is well maintained, generally easy and level, but there are a couple of parts that may be a little muddy.

Wear walking shoes if you can, though trainers are ok for this walk, just be mindful there may be some puddles! Bring a rainjacket just in case.
Dogs are welcome.

After the walk, we can go into Hillsborough village for refreshments, or grab a coffee at Percy's coffee cart in the park itself.

The walk costs £6 for non-members and £1 for paid-up members. Details about paying for membership can be found in the “About” section.

If you need a lift to the forest, just post the general area you’re travelling from and a driver may be able to offer you a spot. With fuel prices continuing to rise, please offer your driver a small tip. If you are a driver, please do not arrange lifts unless you are certain you intend to go.
