Grade: Moderate, about 8 miles on paths, with a shorter 5 mile option

We're heading to Castle Ward on European Heritage Open Day, making the most of the free admission and exploring the estate on the 8-mile Boundary Trail.

Starting from the Shore car park, we'll set off anti-clockwise, initially following the shore of Strangford Lough with views across the water and towards Audley's Castle. We'll then head inland, taking in a mixture of mature woodland, farmland and the historic parkland around the estate. Along the way we'll pass through areas including West Park and Mallard Plantation before crossing the grounds around Windmill Plantation and the Deer Park.

There are plenty of things to look out for along the route, including Audley's Castle, the old walled garden, views of the impressive Castle Ward mansion and, of course, the beautiful scenery around Strangford Lough. The trail also takes us through some of the historic landscape that makes Castle Ward such an interesting place to explore.

Once we've completed the walk, anyone who's interested can take advantage of the free admission to have a look around Castle Ward house itself. The house is particularly interesting for its contrasting Classical and Gothic architectural styles and its views towards Strangford Lough.
Or if you've had enough exploring for one day, there's always the option of heading for a well-earned coffee in the coffee shop and joining us for a bit of craic!

A good opportunity to enjoy one of County Down's most interesting estates, with a bit of history, woodland, farmland, loughside scenery and a free visit to the house thrown in.

🥪 We'll stop somewhere scenic along the way for a leisurely packed lunch, so bring your lunch and plenty to drink.

🥾🧥 Bring a rainjacket just in case. Proper sturdy walking boots/shoes as the trail is around 8 miles with some steeper gradients, narrow sections and plenty of gates.

Getting there:
Post up if you need a lift and hopefully someone can oblige. Please remember to share the fuel costs with your driver.
