Sunday Olsen Creek (aka Stewart Mtn.) Hike

Details

The Washington State DNR just completed a 2-year project to improve the trail system in the Olsen Creek Forest Block near Lake Whatcom, adding new trails while refurbishing old trails, and even blocking several. There is now a nice 7-mile trail with 1400 feet of elevation gain, along with signage to keep us from getting lost. There are also occasional views of the lake, Bellingham, and the Canadian Cascades on a clear day. (This area was also known as Stewart Mountain and was comprised of miles of social trails and logging roads that criss-crossed the hillside.)

Let's check out the trails this Sunday for a 3 to 4 hour moderate hike. The trail is in very good condition and I'd say poles aren't needed and it's appropriate for any good trail shoe. It's a steady climb up, so please be able to handle that and bring lots of water. We'll stop for photos and occasional breaks but no formal lunch break.

Directions to the trailhead: From exit 254 on I-5 in Bellingham, go east on Iowa Street for 0.8 mile, then take a slight left onto Yew Street for 0.5 mile. Turn onto Alabama Street for 1 mile, then turn left onto Northshore Drive for 4.6 miles. Make a slight left onto Y Road at The Fork restaurant. The parking area will be 1.1 miles on the right (opposite Lindquist Rd.).

Notes:

  • No parking pass is required
  • Well-behaved dogs are allowed on leash. We will be sharing the trail with horses and bicycles, so they must be able to cope with that.
  • There is no bathroom at the trailhead nor on the trail.
