Whistle Lake + Hike **Rescheduled**
Details
Starting out this hike co-ordinating venture with a route I'm very familiar with so there's no worry any of us will get lost!
The ACFL's Whistle Lake is a wonderful choice--whether you're there for fishing, swimming, biking, observing the flora (or fauna) OR, for what we have in mind, hiking--it's got you covered.
We'll meet at the Whistle Lake parking lot and head out on Trail 237. All the trails are well-mark and the general route is a clockwise movement around the lake with the addition of a little loop at approximately the half-way round point.
There's a great lake-viewing site that, in warmer months, people gather to watch daredevils leap from the rocks to the water below. We can stop there to ponder-- "Who in their right minds?!!--or have a short snack break before finishing up the hike.
Stamina Alert: This is a moderate/easy hike. There are ups and downs and, particularly if it's rained recently, some sections could be slippery so I would definitely encourage the use of poles for added security. Additionally, there're the normal roots and rocks you'll need to be mindful of. In general we'll cover all sorts of trail conditions; good shoes and poles are recommended.
The pace will be moderate - this isn't a race, after all - but we'll need to keep moving in order to stay warm with the winter cooler air. However, please don't hesitate to let me know if we need to slow down. I want newcomers to feel welcomed.
Notes:
- Hike length: 5mi
Elevation gain: 548ft - No dogs please--although the ACFL allow dogs on leash, I'd like to wait a bit before adding 4-legged hikers
- We'll meet at the Whistle Lake Parking Lot - no pass is required. A bathroom is available between the lake and parking lot.
