Wednesday Hike of Lookout Mountain -- South Summit
Details
Last Monday the group summited Lookout Mountain "North". Let's complete the picture and summit the south end of this mountain. This is a completely different hike than last Monday's Lookout hike of the north summit.
Basic Info: This is a fairly strenuous out-and-back hike of about 9 miles with 2,600 feet elevation gain and a max altitude of 2,676 feet. We like dogs but please no dogs on this one. Discover Parking Pass Required. Privy available at trailhead. We will stop for lunch at the last lookout point.
Overview of Hike: We will start off on an old logging road that has grown into a nice wide non-rocky hiking trail. The path narrows eventually into a regular trail. Up, up, up we will go through a beautiful forest to really nice lookout points with views both east and west -- Olympic Mountains, Cascade Mountains, Salish Sea, Lake Samish, Lake Whatcom, and Lake Padden (weather permitting). To complete the hike, we will go the extra half-mile past the last a good lookout point to the south summit of Lookout Mountain.
Adventure/Stamina Alert: This is a fairly strenuous hike on a minimally maintained trail. There are a few steep sections that may require hands. You will need to be in good enough shape to hike uphill for several miles at a moderate pace (around 2.5 miles per hour).
Driving Directions to Trailhead: Driving Directions: From I-5 -- take Exit 240 and head EAST on Lake Samish Road for about 1 mile. You will enter a small town called Alger. Continue straight through the stop sign as the road will turn into Alger Cain Lake Road. Continue on Alger Cain Lake Road for about 3 miles then take a sharp left at Camp 2 Road. Continue on Camp 2 Road for about 400 or so yards. The parking area will be on your right (if you find yourself on Alder Road, you've gone too far). The parking area is on the southwest corner of Cain Lake, and serves as the boat launch for Cain Lake. The trail is across the street from the parking area. Discover Pass Required. We will start hiking at 10am.
