SCOTT LAKE SUNSET AND MOONRISE

Details

We are planning to capture the sunset then the full moon rise before the end of the golden hour above Scott Lake and the Cascade Mountains. We will travel up the Old McKenzie Highway to the Scott Lake Campground road and park in or near the quarry at the end. We’ll then walk the trail behind the gate toward the shore of the farthest north lake section and campsites.

PHOTOGRAPHY CONSIDERATIONS

Since this meetup is scheduled to capture the last light of the day, plan on bringing equipment for low light and long exposure photography. In other words, you might consider bringing a tripod, lenses, and a remote release for the conditions. This is not a true night sky outing like others we hold. Instead, it's the kind of outing that many users can enjoy with a little planning. Beautiful photos can be captured with cell phones. Alternatively, others are recommended to use wide-angle lens to capture both the width of the scene and foreground objects. You might also want to look for compositions with bear grass in the foreground during sunset. When I was at Scott Lake on July 12th, there was very little bear grass.

OUTING CONSIDERATIONS

The beauty of this location comes with both great risks and rewards. You could find several interesting compositions with foreground objects along the shoreline during sunset. The setting is quite lovely but can greatly affected by mosquitoes. LOTS OF MOSQUITOES. They can be in tolerable quantities or catastrophic numbers. PLAN FOR THE WORST AND HOPE FOR THE BEST!!!

After leaving the locked gate near the quarry, the side trails from the lake are not very big and can be a bit challenging to use when returning to the cars in the dark. Pay EXTRA ATTENTION to the trail and turns as we go to the lake in good light and return in dimmed conditions.

Finally, please consider wearing waterproof shoes for taking photos along the lakeshore. It might be a little soggy in the perfect spot you set up for your composition.
