Airshow of the Cascades

The Airshow of the Cascades is celebrating its 25th year and we're scheduling an outing to experience many of its festivities. In recognition of this silver anniversary, the airshow has been expanded to include a precision acrobatic flying team along with many other aerial performances, static displays, car show, concerts and more. The Friday evening schedule and a lot of additional information are listed below.

This event provides many great photography activities: antique car shows, street photography on the grounds or at the concerts, static airplane displays, aerial shows, plane rides, and a very good, brief fireworks show. I have not been able to confirm that the show will have the popular "wall of flame" segment which is extra special at night. Check out some photos from other years at the end of this announcement.

TWO MEETUP OPTIONS

Since the nature of this event makes coordinated planning difficult, we are scheduling a hybrid meetup.

• First, we will have a traditional rideshare to the event where we meet at the Cascade Village Starbucks parking lot.
• Second, we're scheduling a "meet you there" option for those choosing to drive to the Airshow of the Cascades at the Madras Airport.

With either option, we plan to meet up around 5pm near the South Food Court. Then we can go to a spot to save for viewing/photographing the 7pm+ program and watch each others gear while we're grabbing dinner.

AIRSHOW DETAILS

Admission price is $25 per person at the gate or online. Military veterans with ID are admitted FREE! The admission fee also covers entry to the onsite Erickson Aircraft Collection Museum (http://ericksonaircraftcollection.com).

PHOTOGRAPHY CONSIDERATIONS

This event includes many shooting opportunities and conditions from full daylight photography to low light/night photography of moving objects. A tripod is suggested for the aerial show and fireworks.

Performances are primarily above the airport runway with Mt. Jefferson in the background before and after sunset. Backlighting conditions can help create great landscape images.

• A Gimbal head on your tripod should make it easier to use a tripod and track the fast moving aerial performances.
• Telephoto zoom lenses will be very helpful to bring the action up close. 400-600mm lens will
• Shutter speeds above 1/1000 to 1/2500 should capture the aerial activity.
• ISO speeds can start fairly low and exceed ISO 5000 and 6400 (OR MORE) around and after sunset while supporting a high shutter speed.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

While this is a long outing, time should pass quickly at this varied event.

• Bring a chair for the evening. People often arrive early to set up chairs to save a spot then browse the grounds and get refreshments.
• Bring an extra layer for when it cools off after sunset.
• You are allowed to bring water. It may also be possible to refill containers without charge.
• The Erickson Museum is open during the airshow but is supposed to close at 5pm.
