What we’re about
The purpose of this group is to read and discuss core classics of political philosophy (and associated legal theories). It is open to all interested in a serious charitable read of these classic texts. These are tough reads so the group is not really the place to come unprepared - reading is required. That said, I am a firm believer in keeping reading lengths doable. While an open discussion, I intend to provide a loose structure (aka short presentation and/or agenda) to the meetings to ensure that the basics ideas are covered so that by the end of the session everyone should have control of the readings' core points. I will willingly pass this task to anyone interested in the particular reading.
I'm thinking of the following texts/authors but not wedded to them:
1. Plato, Aristotle (Ancients)
2. Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, etc... (the moderns)
3. Rawls, Nozick, Cohen (Late 20th century)
Maybe some Philosophy of Political Econ readings:
Smith, Ricardo, Marx, Sraffa, Keynes, Friedman, Thaler, Piketty
Update: So far we have focused on Marx, Cohen and Sraffa - hoping to start the "modern" series soon.
