This course covers the fundamentals of typography—presented in an accessible, practical way with plenty of room for drawing and experimentation.

We view type not merely as text, but as form: What is the visual impact of a letter? Why does a typeface appear elegant, playful, bold, or understated? What makes type easy to read? And how can it become part of a drawing, a card, or a small design project?

Together, we will explore the visual impact of type, letterforms, spacing, rhythm, composition, and the interplay between typography and illustration. Step by step, you will learn to observe letters more consciously, arrange words more harmoniously, and intentionally incorporate type into your own creative projects.
The course takes place in a small group to ensure ample time for individual guidance, questions, and personal feedback.

The focus is not on perfection or rigid rules, but on developing a keen eye, enjoying the creative process, and completing a small final project of your own.

About the instructor:
Antje Schubert is an illustrator, designer, and the founder of süssmädchen. For over a decade, she has been personalizing jewelry and accessories by hand, working daily with letters, words, and short messages.
Through her professional work and personal drawing practice, she has developed a keen sense of the expressive power of type—conveyed through form, line, spacing, composition, and overall impact. Drawing is at the heart of her workshop: letters are not just observed but understood as forms, sketched, experimented with, and developed further through design.
Who is this workshop for? This course is designed for anyone who enjoys drawing, designing, keeping a sketchbook, creating cards, or simply appreciates beautiful lettering—or for those who want to incorporate typography more intentionally into their creative work. It offers a practical, accessible approach with plenty of room to experiment.

No prior experience is required!

Everything is explained step-by-step. You don’t need to be an expert at drawing or have perfect handwriting; all that matters is curiosity, a passion for design, and a willingness to experiment.
By the end, you will take home new foundational skills, practical exercises, greater confidence in working with lettering, and a small typographic piece of your own creation.
