This month, instead of reading the same book, we will each read a book of our own choosing that corresponds with the theme of America’s 250th Anniversary.
The book you choose should focus on a significant event or element of early United States history, although it does not need to take place only during the Revolutionary War period. You may choose a fiction or non-fiction book.
Although not required, we strongly encourage you to embrace the America 250 theme Tell Inclusive Stories by reading a book about a lesser-known group or historical event, or history told from the perspective of a marginalized group. For much of our history, the United States has excluded people—women, free and enslaved African Americans, Indigenous people, immigrants, people with disabilities, the poor, and many others—from full participation and representation in the nation’s political, economic, and cultural life. The America 250 commemoration is an opportunity to continue the nation’s reckoning with the past, both its glory and its missteps and flaws. By telling previously untold stories we will enable everyone to find a place in our nation’s narrative.
During the book club meeting, as always, you will be invited to share your thoughts on the book. This month, we also hope you will share what you learn about America’s history. Collectively, we hope to come away with many new facts and insights and even possibly remedy some misconceptions.
