*While “getting published” is an important step in an author’s career, and a desirable means for many artists to enhance the visibility of their work, there is more to publishing than “getting one’s writing/art out there.”
An increasing number of book artists and independent publishers see the value of their work in the collaborative aspects of it. Add bookstores hosting readings and performances, print studios and galleries offering workshops and DIY book binding courses, as well as an ever growing number of zine and book festivals, and you get an impression of the community-building potential of independent publishing. The roundtable brings together local and international book artists and publishers who recognize the value of this particular dimension of making books, exploring different ways to foster it. The participants will share some insights into their work, as well as their experience with collaborative printing, binding, publishing, and book events.
***Typesetting Loss is a long poem by Joseph Jude—a meditation on shapes and patterns, as they relate to the movement of people in and out of one’s life. Jude’s personal record of longing centers on a mid-twentieth century factory sign, visible from the apartment in which the story is set. The sign prompts a reflection on Jakob Erbar’s famousgeometric type design, which, in a moment of profound uncertainty, offers the narrator a sense of order and stability. Loose-leaf, unbound, Jude’s poem is accompanied by drawings by Susanne Schwieter. Joseph Jude lives in Berlin, where he practices as a short story writer, and poet. Born in Madras, of Anglo-Indian descent, he is interested in movement, and places, in melancholia as it relates to migration. At our release event, Joseph Jude will read an excerpt from Typesetting Loss, and have a conversation about his writing and his collaboration with the artist, with Falschrum co-founder Stefan Maneval.
The exhibitors include: textur mag, WIRWIR PUBLISHES, TIRESIAS PROJEKT, BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE, Edition 502, Fukt Magazine for Drawing, Schnecken Publishing, Errant Journal, Falschrum Books, SAND Journal, FLORETS Magazine, Maria Canga, Mata, dusk butterfly & our afterparty hosts, Tropical Diaspora Records.
Fittingly for this Berlin Writers meetup group, it would also be incredible to see some connections made at this fair -- could your work be printed in one of the publications after meeting the faces behind them at this market? Will the work you discover inspire your next works for performance or print? Come by and find out!
