Learn NYC Open Data Workshop - BetaNYC's Open Data 102
Details
BetaNYC has designed tools and customized online trainings specifically intended to help YOU access, analyze, map and use data to inform civic decision-making. These insights come from a multi-year partnership with the Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer.
Throughout this pandemic we are told to flatten the curve. We hear about testing, per-capita, and are presented mind-numbing numbers of infections, and, tragically, deaths. Something we hear on a regular basis is “do we have the data for that?”
In NYC and thanks to Local Law 11 of 2012, the City’s Open Data Law, we have quite a bit of municipal data. This data foundation gives community members and advocates the ability to ask, “why isn’t the city producing more data?”
Our intro to open data workshop has a focus on fundamental terms and processes needed to understand NYC’s open data and introduces participants to BoardStat, a 311 data analytics dashboard made with and for NYC’s community boards. BoardStat lets you see key insights on 311 service requests.
This workshop is oriented through the lense of a community board but is accessible to the general public. In this class we teach several municipal tools and link them together via “data journeys.” Participants will walk out of the workshop ready to augment their decision making with NYC open data.
This is our first online workshop and will run 60-90 mins long. This training is supported by Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer and is funded by Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
This 102 workshop will introduce you to BoardStat, a tool to query 311 requests, and show you how to explore trends in health, safety and quality of life concerns. Additional key datasets/tools will also be reviewed. Come ready to learn and get right into datasets and graphs. Bring your laptop and be prepared to participate.
We will be teaching this class via zoom. We are 100% confident in Zoom’s security and encourage you to read what Mozilla Foundation has said about Zoom or ICANN’s blog post on zoom. If you have other questions about zoom, please see the FAQ we have developed for NYC’s Community Boards that use zoom < http://bit.ly/vrboard-faq >.
We do recommend that you do this class from a laptop or computer and that you familiarize yourself with our worksheet < http://bit.ly/boardstat_worksheet_v1 >
