The State of Civic Technology w/ 2013 Goals & #NYTMvotes Workshop

Details
For the past few years, New York City has positioned itself as a premier city for technology startups and technocratic government policy. In 2012, with 1 in 5 new jobs in America were created in NY State, New York led the nation in new job creation. At the same time, NYC further cemented its roots in innovation through a first in the nation open data legislation and further expanding entrepreneurial opportunity for all. In 2014, with a new Mayor & City Council Speaker, there is a possibility of these initiatives disappearing.
With this being the last year of the Bloomberg administration, we have a unique opportunity to ensure NYC has a legacy of transparency, participation, and innovation. This conversation will briefly recap all of the City's and community's achievements, and lay out a roadmap for 2013.
After a brief presentation, we will breakout into workgroups to discuss the creation of a white paper titled "Citizens Guide to the Digital City." Our white paper will be used to inform NYC's current and prospective elected officials on what we want in the next administration. Our white paper is based on NYC's "Roadmap to the Digital City" and will cover the following topics:
- Government transparency and opening up Data
- Communications (Broadcast / Websites & Interaction / Social Media)
- Engagement
- Education Policy
- Broader Policy Goals
In the lead up to this meetup, we will be asking for a bit of homework. For now, please read up on the following documents.
