For the next few months, we’ll be revisiting the basics. What does this entail? We’ll all be evaluating the stock of the month featured in the BetterInvesting magazine for the next three months. This month, we’ll be focusing on Netflix, Inc. (NFLX).

We start with important foundational concepts, such as compounding returns, market volatility, and diversification.
Investing through mutual funds and ETF’s is discussed.

Actively managed and passively managed investing styles are explored with their fees and costs.

Finally, we cover directly investing in stocks, following BetterInvesting’s proven principles. (While we are covering the principles, we will not be analyzing any individual stocks in this class.)

This beginner’s overview is offered live so all questions can be answered in real time. There will not be a recording but support material is provided.

In the series we will guide you through the following questions:

• Why should I invest?
• Why do compounding returns matter to my success?
• What are active and passive investment management?
• How do fees impact my return?
• What does it mean to diversify my portfolio?
• Can I beat the market?
• What is BetterInvesting’s Methodology for investing in individual stocks?

This series is limited to a small number of students to encourage interaction.

Join us in September to ground yourself in this important topic. This class is suitable for beginners and those who want to brush up on basic concepts. Bring your curiosity!

BetterInvesting membership is NOT required to attend.

This class is a fundraiser for the nonprofit BetterInvesting Houston Chapter. The chapter uses the proceeds for chapter programming, education, and outreach programs. By signing up for the class you are helping yourself and your fellow investors.

This class is a prelude to The Beginner's SSG Bootcamp, which takes you through BetterInvesting’s Stock Selection Guide (SSG) step by step, over three days. (October 24, November 7, November 14, 2026)

In the Bootcamp we go through the SSG using real companies and using hands on exercises. Support resources such as Value Line, Morningstar Premium, and ManifestInvesting.com will be demonstrated live within the series.

How do you know if a stock is a good investment and is it trading at a reasonable price? The Stock Selection Guide (SSG) can show you.

Join BI Houston Chapter as we walk through the tool step by step and answer all your questions. The tool is elegant yet can be intimidating, but it is one of the most effective tools you can use when selecting quality growth companies.

We will guide you to answer these questions:

• What is BetterInvesting’s Methodology?
• How can I identify a quality growth company?
• Has the company’s management been effective with its resources?
• Is the company trading at a reasonable price?
• What is my potential long-term gain in investing in this stock?

You will get the answers through a series and hands on exercises studying real companies. You will use premium tools such as SSG Plus, Value Line, Morning Star and Manifesting Investing. All of which we will access live within the series.

This is a live series and there will be no recordings, however, students will receive complete handouts and will have ample opportunities to ask questions.

The tools we use do cost money; however, if you are not a current member, the free 30 day trial period for each service will cover the duration of the class.

The cost for one year Plus Membership of BetterInvesting is $99 (regularly $145). Manifest Investing is a separate service, with its own annual fee. Memberships in both programs include all benefits and features.

Together we will complete multiple SSGs using the SSG Plus tool in an interactive session on three consecutive Saturdays from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm:

• October 24th where we will discuss how to find appropriate material to fill up a Stock Selection Guide (SSG)
• November 7th where we will discuss Forecasting Growth using Trend Analysis and Evaluating Management
• November 14th where we will discuss Valuation High & Low P/E and Valuation Risk & Reward

In addition to in class presentations there will be interactive exercises and homework.
