Understanding License Plate Reader Technology in Lake County
At the April General Meeting, we’ll hear from Kristin Tassi of Tassi Communications, who will provide an overview of license plate reader (LPR) technology, including systems like those developed by Flock Safety that are used throughout Lake County.
Kristin will walk members through how the technology works, how it’s used by local law enforcement to support investigations, and the safeguards in place to protect privacy—such as data ownership, limited retention periods, and audit trails that track system access and use. She will also address common misconceptions about what LPR technology can and cannot do.
As LPR systems become more widely adopted across Lake County and neighboring communities—and as Illinois lawmakers consider legislation to govern them—this is an opportunity to better understand the critical role that LPRs play in maintaining safe streets for all.
