For this meetup we are happy to have these two invited talks

Eline Ramatchandirane, Michael Denzler, Stefan Wittke and Oliver Lürssen: Big Data Governance in Organizations.

BI applications will be useless until Data Governance is understood and enforced in the organization.

While data quality is an important aspect to Data Governance, it is not all. Data Governance is more globally about making a decision about what data is needed for the business and what it means to the enterprise. In fact, data quality must be understood from an IT perspective, from a security perspective, but also from a business perspective. Basically, IT cannot be the owner of the data governance programme, as it does not know what data is used for and what needs to be governed. It is yet an essential participant in the activity, as it defines the framework to enable the Data Governance process to be repeatable and scalable, which is even more challenging in the context of a Big Data implementation. Big Data Governance needs to be flexible and collaborative and must allow any stakeholder in the organization to find data, describe data, use data and manage data, as needed.

In this presentation, our team will address the different aspects of Data Governance as part of the development of a Big Data strategy and address potential solutions under the perspective of both Business Intelligence and, security and IT management.

Mark Whalley: Tracking commercial aircrafts in near real-time using a Raspberry Pi, Kafka and Vertica.

There are many components to this project including, using Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) to track the position, speed and other metrics of commercial aircraft, Raspberry Pi computers to perform data capture and decoding, a custom-built Extract Transform and Load (ETL) function, Apache Kafka, integration between Kafka and Vertica, simple data visualisation using geospatial coordinates and a Google Maps API, time series gap filling and interpolation, outlier detection and sessionization to name but a few!

The two pictures show Marks Raspberry Pi Hardware for flight data capture and a plot of flights arriving/leaving Geneva.

Meetup Description

We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to CGI for agreeing to host our second Big Data & Machine Learning Meetup in Munich and to the Vertica Team for their support in planning and organizing this event.

We invite you to mark this Meetup in your calendars and show your support for what we hope will be an interesting and informative event, and give you the opportunity to network with other BD&ML Members.

If you have any other questions about this Meetup, please do not hesitate in contacting me via this Meetup portal or catch up with me at one of the Meetups.

Kindest regards

Dieter

“Please also note that there is a maximum limit of 70 attendees for this event. However, in common with other Meetups, we unfortunately see quite a high no-show rate (despite pleading with people to release their places if they find they are unable to attend). We have decided to raise the number of attendees who can register, in the hope that we can get closer to a full-house. We will however have to stick to a maximum of 40 through the doors. So on the night, it will be on a first come, first served. So make sure you turn up early to guarantee entry!”
