Annual Memorial Ride in honor of Carl Henn

Details

Join us as we honor the memory of a Rockville resident and community activist, the late Carl Henn, with this annual casual 13-mile bike ride, including brief remarks by Carl's family and elected officials.

We will be riding around town going through local parks, past the community gardens that Carl helped to create, over an impressive pedestrian/bike-only bridge, and through a little-known tunnel under a busy city street. We will, of course, also ride portions of the trail that was named after this special Rockville citizen.

Our 13-mile loop route is entirely paved, so any type of bicycle is acceptable. Expect a few mild to moderate hills. We will pedal at a casual 10-12 mph pace and have several regrouping stops.

We will meet at the Thomas Farm Community Center in Fallsgrove no later than 10 am for check-in and preparation. Restrooms should be available. Please be on time as the event will begin with remarks from Carl's family and other speakers.

ABOUT CARL HENN

Carl Henn was an avid bicyclist and environmental advocate who died in July 2010 after a lightning strike during a powerful storm. He played a critical role in the creation of three community gardens in Rockville, ran for city office, and served on the Environmental Commission and RBAC. He was also the president of the NIH Bicycle Commuter Club.

When Carl saw an opportunity to make a difference, he quite literally put his wheels to the road and quietly, effectively got things done, leaving a better world in his wake. Following his untimely passing, Rockville's Millennium Trail was renamed in his honor.
