Madera Canyon to Old Baldy Trailhead
Details
Take a ride up Madera Canyon from Green Valley. Out and back for 30 miles total distance and 2500-3000 ft of climb. The views of the Santa Rita mountains never get old and this ride is a good alternative / practice for Mount Lemmon.
Meet at 8:00 AM at Posada Java (665 S Park Centre Ave, Green Valley)
The route crosses Continental road and proceeds on Whitehouse Canyon road.
The road climbs to the Old Baldy trailhead (mile 13.5) at elevation 5400 ft. The first seven miles is a gradual grade and somewhat boring, but after that the scenery (and the grade) gets more and more interesting. The last half mile to the Old Baldy trailhead is 12% grade. On the way down from the Old Baldy trailhead, take an optional trip to Bog Springs campground at elevation 5040 ft.
Along the way, there are various lodges and trailheads, including the Santa Rita lodge with benches for bird watching at mile 12. No need to stay together on this hilly out and back route, turn around when you feel you have done enough.
Meet for proof of life (and coffee) at Posada Java after the ride.
