Health/Safety Tidbit: When you finish a long ride, do you sometimes feel light headed or dizzy? A drop in blood pressure after a long ride is a phenomenon called post-exercise hypotension. The American Journal of Hypertension, 2004, for healthy adults, shows aerobic exercise can lower systolic blood pressure by 5–15 mmHg and diastolic by 4–8 mmHg in the hours following activity. This is common, especially after prolonged aerobic exercise like our two to three hour bike rides. There are several contributors to lower blood pressure. During exercise, your muscles need more oxygen, so blood vessels dilate to increase blood flow. After exercise, these vessels can remain dilated for a while, reducing vascular resistance and lowering blood pressure. After intense or prolonged exercise, your heart rate and stroke volume (the amount of blood pumped per beat) may decrease as your body shifts to recovery mode, leading to lower blood pressure. Exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight), raising blood pressure during activity. Post-exercise, the parasympathetic system (rest-and-digest) takes over, slowing heart rate and relaxing blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure. Sweating during a long bike ride will reduce blood volume, contributing to lower pressure, especially if you didn’t fully rehydrate along the way and afterward. Post-exercise hypotension typically lasts a few hours but can persist up to 12–24 hours, depending on exercise intensity, duration, and individual factors like fitness level or hydration status. What can you do to minimize this? Don't overexert yourself, monitor your vitals during the ride, cool down slowly, and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
