DNA Miniprep Workshop
Details
Join us at BioCurious for a hands-on DNA Miniprep Workshop on March 22, 2026, from 4:00–6:00 PM! This beginner-friendly session is perfect for anyone curious about molecular biology or looking to gain practical lab skills.
In this workshop, participants will learn what a DNA miniprep is and why it is one of the most common techniques used in molecular biology labs. A miniprep is a method used to isolate small circular DNA molecules called plasmids from bacteria such as Escherichia coli and other microbial hosts. You’ll learn what plasmids are, how scientists use them for cloning and genetic engineering, and why they are essential tools in biotechnology and research.
After a short introduction to the theory, attendees will move into the lab to perform a miniprep themselves using bacterial cultures. You’ll go step-by-step through the process of extracting plasmid DNA and purifying it from the rest of the cell contents. To finish the workshop, participants will measure the concentration and quality of their DNA using a spectrophotometer, learning how scientists confirm that their extraction worked.
Whether you’re a student, hobbyist, or aspiring bioengineer, this workshop offers a great opportunity to learn core molecular biology techniques in a welcoming community lab environment. Come get hands-on experience and see DNA science in action!
This workshop will cost $40; payment will be available via venmo or cash on the day. All students under 18 years of age must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
