About us

Led by Lillie J. Harris, a trained death doula and artist through Collaborative Catharsis, the BIPOC Grief Circle is a monthly event where Black and Indigenous People of Color can sit with each other in contemplative meditation to honor their own grief.

Whether experiencing the death of a loved one, a transition in identity, or the loss of external structure, the BIPOC Grief Circle is a space to sit, be seen, and allow all emotions in need of acknowledgement to come forth within a compassionate and confidential community.

All that's required for participants to bring to the monthly meetups is a cushion to sit on (whether that be a yoga mat, an outdoor pillow, or a bolster) and an unscented candle. If you would prefer to not bring your own candle, an individual tealight and lighter will be provided.

We'll begin the session by sharing personal thoughts and memories associated with what we're grieving. Then for the duration of the session we'll sit in silent reflection with each other while our candles burn. Throughout this period, participants are encouraged to remember, breathe deeply, and allow any emotions that come forth to be expressed without shame (sudden bursts of crying or even laughter is expected!)

We'll wind down gradually and blow the remainder of our candles out in unison. Afterwards, for those who consent to physical touch, hugs will be shared and further conversations about their post-session feelings will bring the meetup to a soft close.
