WINGS ACROSS BORDERS: TRACKING WILDLIFE. CONNECTING CULTURES.

Time: Snack and social time from 5:30 to 6:00. Program begins at 6:00. Ends at 7:00 pm.

All members and non-members welcome.

Migratory birds wearing tiny transmitters have been picked up by our Motus receivers — and each “ping” tells part of an incredible story. By studying their paths, we can learn where a bird’s journey began, who tagged it, how far and fast it traveled, how many stops it made along the way, and what research questions it’s helping to answer.

Join Kay Hawklee who will present an overview of the global Motus Wildlife Tracking System — a collaborative research network spanning more than 40 countries. She’ll share how the Anderson Mesa Motus station came to be, thanks to dedicated Flagstaff volunteers in the early 2000s, and how today’s efforts are aligned with National Audubon’s 2023–2028 Strategic Plan, “Flight Plan.”

So, birds are pinging our stations… so what?
The answers are exciting, innovative, and groundbreaking — offering real-world opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to study migration, movement, and conservation across borders.
