About us
Welcome! This group is organized by Birding for the People and brings together collaborators from Rose City Bird Collective and Feminist Bird Club PDX to offer inclusive, beginner-friendly birding events in and around Portland.
Our meetups are relaxed, social, and focused on building community while learning together. No fancy gear is required, and most events have shared optics available to borrow.
Rose City Bird Collective helps connect the local birding community through weekly free events and online spaces.
Feminist Bird Club PDX is a volunteer-run birding club focused on building community and increasing inclusivity in birding. Some of their events are affinity spaces designed for historically marginalized communities (such as LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, disabled & neurodivergent birders), while others welcome all participants.
Birding for the People works to lower barriers to birding by organizing free events, sharing resources and providing loaner optics.
Together, we’re building a birding community centered on curiosity, joy, and birds.

Join Kim for a great fall morning bird walk at Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, one of Northeast Portland's best urban birding locations. This compact natural area features two ponds, Whitaker Slough, and a beautiful black cottonwood forest surrounded by native shrubs and wetland vegetation, providing excellent habitat for an impressive variety of birds.
Within early November, fall migration is winding down and the bird community at Whitaker Ponds starts to take on a distinctly winter feel. Waterfowl numbers continue to increase as ducks return to the ponds and slough for the colder months, while wintering sparrows, kinglets, chickadees, woodpeckers, and other songbirds can be found throughout the surrounding forest and dense vegetation. Herons, Belted Kingfishers, and raptors may also be seen around the open water and treetops.
This beginner-friendly walk will include frequent stops to observe birds, practice identification, and talk about the transition from fall migration into the winter birding season at Whitaker Ponds.

Join Bell for a late fall morning bird walk at Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area, one of Portland’s largest and most productive wetland habitats. With expansive seasonal wetlands, open water, grasslands, willow thickets, and wooded edges, the area supports an impressive variety of birds throughout the year.
By November, the wetlands have largely transitioned into their winter bird community. Waterfowl numbers continue to build as ducks and other waterbirds settle in for the colder months, while sparrows, kinglets, chickadees, and other resident and wintering songbirds can be found throughout the surrounding brush and wooded edges. Herons, egrets, raptors, and other wetland birds remain regular sights, making this an excellent time to explore the area as fall gives way to winter.
This beginner-friendly walk will move at a relaxed pace with frequent stops to observe birds, practice identification, and talk about wintering waterfowl, seasonal bird movements, and the importance of wetland habitat during the colder months.
