Nature Journaling & Bird Sketching for Beginners at Laurelhurst Park

Join local artist and birder Tora Benzeyen (@toratorito) for a relaxed morning of bird and nature sketching at Laurelhurst Park. This beautiful urban park offers a wonderful mix of wildlife, mature trees, open lawns, and a scenic pond, providing endless inspiration for artists, nature journalers, birders, and curious beginners alike.
Rather than a formal art class, this gathering is an opportunity to slow down, observe the natural world, and sketch together. We'll spend most of our time stationary, with occasional short walks between sketching locations as we explore different areas of the park.

What to Expect
• We believe nature observation and creativity are for everyone, thus this is a beginner-friendly event open to all drawing abilities.
• A relaxed pace with plenty of time for observation, sketching, discussion, and questions.
• A welcoming, all-ages environment focused on curiosity, creativity, and connection with nature.
• Informal sharing of techniques, ideas, and creative approaches.
• Occasional guidance from Tora on observation and simple drawing techniques.

We'll begin near the pond, where Mallards, Wood Ducks, Great Blue Herons, American Crows, and a variety of songbirds are often easy to observe. The clear water can provide opportunities to sketch fish visible beneath the surface, while butterflies, trees, flowers, and other natural details throughout the park offer endless inspiration.

Art Supplies
• Please bring your own sketchbook, paper, pencils, pens, or other preferred art supplies.
• Professional materials are not necessary—a pencil and a few sheets of paper are enough to participate.
• A sketchbook and a couple of pencils of different hardness (such as HB and 2B) are recommended but not required.

Accessibility & Trail Conditions
• Surface: Primarily paved park paths with some compact gravel or natural-surface areas.
• Grade: Mostly flat / short inclines.
• Expect: Mostly stationary sketching with occasional short walks between locations over approximately 2 hours.
• Crowds/noise: Moderate. This is a popular urban park with many people doing many different activities. Always some dog walkers, mostly on leashes. Expect moderate city/park noise.
• Shade/sun: Mix of shade and sun throughout the park.
• Seating: Benches and informal seating opportunities are available in many areas, feel free to bring own light chair or blanket.
• Restrooms: Public restrooms available in the park.
• Cell service: Generally reliable.

Weather + What to Bring

Dress in layers and be prepared for changing conditions. Comfortable footwear, water, sun protection, and water are all recommended.
