Join Kim for an early fall morning bird walk at Lone Fir Cemetery, one of Southeast Portland’s most distinctive urban green spaces. Its mature trees, open lawns, dense shrubs, and quiet pathways create valuable habitat for a variety of resident and migratory birds, especially during the changing seasons.

By early October, fall migration is still underway, though the mix of birds is beginning to shift toward species that will remain through the winter. Migrating songbirds may still be moving through the tree canopy and shrubbery, while sparrows, kinglets, chickadees, woodpeckers, and other resident birds become increasingly noticeable. The cemetery’s large trees can also attract raptors, nuthatches, creepers, and mixed flocks of smaller birds.

This beginner-friendly walk will move at a relaxed pace with frequent stops to observe birds, practice identification, and talk about how urban green spaces like Lone Fir provide important stopover and winter habitat during the fall season.
