Join Nicole for a crisp fall morning bird walk at Mt. Tabor Park, one of Portland’s most iconic urban natural areas. The park’s mature conifer and deciduous forest, open lawns, reservoirs, and wooded slopes provide a variety of habitats that support both resident birds and seasonal migrants.
By mid-October, fall migration is beginning to slow and the park starts to take on more of its winter bird community. Kinglets, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, sparrows, and other woodland birds become especially noticeable as they move through the trees in mixed flocks. Raptors may be seen overhead, while thrushes, juncos, and other fall and winter residents forage through the forest and along the park’s edges.
This beginner-friendly walk will move at a relaxed pace with frequent stops to observe birds, practice identification, and talk about seasonal changes in Portland’s urban forests as fall transitions toward winter.
