You don’t have to be a Bitraf member to take the course.

Want to learn how to work wood without the noise of power tools? I’m hosting a hands-on weekend course at Bitraf focused entirely on traditional hand-tool woodworking. Whether you've never touched a saw or just want to improve your precision, this course will walk you through the fundamentals. Over two days, you'll learn how to measure, saw, and plane by hand while building a classic wooden box.
We’re keeping this strictly limited to 3 people. This ensures everyone gets plenty of space at the workbench, one-on-one help, and no one has to wait in line to use a tool.
What we’ll cover:

  • Work holding: How to properly use a traditional workbench, vises, and hold-fasts.
  • Accurate layout: Why we use marking knives and gauges instead of pencils.
  • Sawing: Getting comfortable with both Western push saws and Japanese pull saws.
  • Planing: Using classic hand planes to flatten and smooth wood.
  • Joinery: Cutting rabbet joints and grooves using specialty vintage planes and chisels.

I’ll be providing the material and pre-milling the boards to the right thickness before the class starts, so we can skip the heavy grunt work and focus entirely on joinery and technique. All the tools will be freshly sharpened and ready to go.
