Create Poignant Stories in Comics - Comics Workshop
UNZINE 95, 180 Soi Sukhumvit 95, Bang Chak, Phra Khanong,, Bangkok, THWe have the pleasure to collaborate with Baturu art space to bring you a one of a kind workshop at UNZINE 95.
We’d like to invite you to Create Poignant Stories in Comics by cartoonist Ivan Velez whose career spans 35-years with groundbreaking work in American mainstream and independent comics.
The workshop will focus on how to use social issues, multicultural and gender diversity to create compelling and poignant stories. You’ll create characters of many different shapes and backgrounds and come up with a plan and story structure to propel your comics into people’s hearts.
All art supplies will be provided.
Date: Saturday 22nd of August 2026
Time: 2 to 4pm

What to expect:
1. (10 – 15 minutes) Intro to Ivan Velez and a short visual history of his work and place in the world of progressive comics.
2. (10 minutes) Some demos about character creation and picking the themes for your work. Typical samples will be the use of our myths and legends to tell stories that are worthy of today’s attention.
3. (20 – 30 minutes) Participants will draw and design characters and come up with a basic plot and ‘pitch’ for their stories. The instructor will help with guidance and methods as they try to create.
4. (10 minutes) A short break to stretch and use the bathroom.
5. (15 minutes) A final soft critique of their work and suggestions on how to move forward with their ideas.
6. (5 minutes) A last word where to publish their work (mostly digitally and online, but also actual print).
