Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of Black American and Pan-African cultures that takes place during the holiday season from December 26 to January 1 of each year.

Kwanzaa celebrates Black American history, values, family, and community. It's based on African harvest festival traditions and the philosophy of Kawaida, which defines culture as a key component in people's development.

The Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba)
The celebration centers on the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles, which are communitarian values from African culture. Each day is dedicated to one principle: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

Gwinnett County Kwanzaa 2025 - Celebrating Kujichagulia: Self-Determination is a family-friendly event, so bring everyone in the family and your friends.

  • Kujichagulia: The second day of Kwanzaa -- December 27 -- is dedicated to the principle of kujichagulia, which means "self-determination". The day is a call for Black Americans to define their own culture, identity, and values, rather than being defined by others.

The event features a Kwanzaa program, guest speakers, fun activities, Black books giveaway, Black culture games, prizes, and networking. We are going to love up on each other while building Black unity and power with a 2026 strategic plan!
