What we’re about

Welcome to Black Onyx Sista Social (B.O.S.S)!

B.O.S.S. is a community for Black women, by Black women! Our purpose is to build a community of Black women who desire to strengthen their friendships with other Black women, while having experiences and conversations unique to Black women, in spaces for Black women.

What is the symbolism behind the Black Onyx? Black Onyx is a stone that symbolizes strength, perseverance and the ability to overcome challenges. These qualities exemplify the Black woman in all aspects of life, and speak to all the challenges that Black women face and must overcome in this society. The Black Onyx is The Black Woman! The Black Woman is beautiful, strong, and valuable! We are the Essence of power! We are the B.O.S.S.!

What we do?
B.O.S.S. is a group where we come together over a cup of coffee to engage in thoughtful, meaningful, and authentic conversations about our Black experiences---whether it be about what we experience on the job, in our intimate relationships, in our families, and in our friendships with other women, or, about how we got through the Big CHOP! Whatever the conversation, it will be discussed among women with whom we feel we can relate, to help us form the trust that we need between us, to deepen and improve our relationships to our Sistas!

We don't just talk: we also have fun! The key ingredient to having healthy relationships with other Sistas is self-care. We here at B.O.S.S. engage in self-care by brunching, attending concerts, museums, parks, getting active with beach bike rides, and impromptu get-togethers, and girls night out. Bringing the fun and positive energy is definitely a requirement for admission to this group!

We got your personal development covered: We understand that here is LA, personal development is a must in this competitive world we live in. We will provide networking opportunities and events that can assist you in your personal development journey. We will provide and facilitate group phone calls to encourage those who need encouraging, and to allow others to opportunity to encourage those who need encouraging. We will share networking opportunities to challenge your goals and ambitions. We will cheer you on and celebrate your accomplishments whatever they may be. We will be here for you in your best, and worst moments.

We Give Back: For those of you looking to uplift your community, we've got you covered! There will be plenty of opportunities to support your communties through our committee, The B.O.S.S. Benevolent Society. If you have ideas that you'd like to share, or a project you'd like to start, this is the place! Let us know and we'll see what we can do!

Requirements for membership.

  1. Show up! It is a known fact that LA is filled with flakey people who cancel at the last minute, or who don't bother to show up at all, after making a commitment. If you engage in this sort of behavior, please do not join this group. Many women want more friends, or better relationships with other Black women, but they do stuff like this. We are only interested in committed Sistas who truly are ready to work on their relationships with other Sistas.
Three last minute cancelations/no shows will be grounds for removal from the group.
  2. Some events will have Event Planning Fees and will require deposits.
  3. You are required to read the description of each event that you RSVP for. Remember, ignorance is no excuse for the law.
  4. You must share your phone number. If you are Leary about doing so, please do not request membership. We will only use your cell number to communicate about events, and to communicate with one another via What's App just before, or during an event.
  5. Check your energy: When people pay to attend an event, or if they choose to attend a free event, they do so with the expectation of having a great experience. If you are not in a great mood before attending an event, use discretion and ask yourself, will I be downer to others who have paid their money, or, who is expecting to have a good time? Whatever the case, the point is to check your energy and understand that your energy, if not good at an event, can negatively effect others. Again, use your discretion.
  6. Be open: The best way to develop a relationships with others is to be open, nonjudgmental, and to listen. As Black women, we sometimes allow our insecurities and personal issues get in the way of a positive first encounter with another Sista. In the process, we miss out on some amazing Sistas, who would likely have been an amazing friend. So when we get together, let's just be open and nonjudgmental, and have a great and authentic time!

I hope that after reading through what this community will be about, you feel compelled to join. We are looking forward to meeting you soon, and look forward to creating some amazing and memorable times with you in this Black Onyx Sista Social!

Warmly,

Kristyn S., Organizer
