Thanksgiving Hike to Apshawa Preserve
Details
The weather forecast for Thanksgiving Saturday looks perfect for a hike! Let's do a shorter one to Apshawa Preserve in New Jersey.
The hike will be about 6 miles long with a total elevation gain of around 1,000 feet. This is a moderately difficult hike primarily because of the mileage, so only physically fit individuals should participate. However, no prior hiking experience is necessary!
The number of participants is limited only by the availability of carpool seats. I’ll send out the carpooling spreadsheet to help us organize on Friday morning.
Our plan is to leave New York City around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday so we can all meet at the Apshawa Parking lot by 10:30 a.m. (Please check the exact address listed above on this page).
For the hike, everyone should bring a lunch/snack and at least two liters of water.
As for gear, you must have good hiking boots or sturdy sneakers. Remember to dress in layers of clothing, ideally synthetic materials. We’ll get warm while hiking, but we’ll cool down quickly when we stop for lunch! The forecast is mostly sunny with highs in the lower to mid-40s. Also, please don't forget a rain jacket just in case we encounter a rain shower or strong winds.
Finally, bring some cash. We might stop for a drink after the hike, and you’ll also need to chip in some money to your driver to cover the cost of gas and tolls if you are carpooling.
I'll be bringing a map, a compass, a first aid kit, and some other essential gear.
If you have any questions, please e-mail me directly. If your question is something everyone should know, please post it here!
