Join Meetup CEO David Siegel for an in-depth presentation on the current state of Meetup and the future of online events. This edition focuses on Meetup communities in Europe.

Main Takeaways:

  • In continental Europe, there are more than 25 million members, 54,000 Meetup groups, and 6,700 Meetup events every week.
  • Online events are here to stay, but particularly in continental Europe, it’s becoming increasingly safe to plan events outside of online. So we want to talk about recovery for our communities.
  • We’re expanding our Get Back Together movement.
    • The countries included are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam
  • Organizers, schedule a safe in-person event in the next 2 weeks and Meetup will donate 50% of your next month’s subscription to Global Giving’s Coronavirus Relief Fund.

Top Q&A Questions:

  • I would love some information about hosting benefit events for COVID-19 relief. Any specific ideas for engagement?
    • My first advice is to find a cause that really speaks deeply to your community. Meetup chose Global Giving because we didn’t want to prioritize one specific community and they are broad.
    • Another suggestion is to put it out to a poll. Come up with 2 or 3 causes that you and your group can be passionate about and engage your members around the decision-making process. And try to find a way to make your events fun and creative. In-person fundraisers don’t necessarily translate well to online.
  • What are Meetup’s upcoming product priorities?
    • Next week (on June 23), Meetup’s product team will be hosting a Product update Meetup Live event. That being said, right now there are three significant product priorities. The first is to make it easier for members to browse and discover events. We also want to update how event recommendations are made. And for organizers, we’re also launching some new features that you’ll hear more about from the Product team update next week.
  • Can Meetup give local guidelines to decide if it’s safe to meet in-person?
    • Please follow your government and local authority guidelines and if and when you feel that it is safe for your group to meet in person, here are some helpful tips. Every country is different, and within every country every city is different. While Meetup has had contact with authorities in some countries, I think it’s dangerous for Meetup to be the decision-maker on what’s safe across 190 countries.
