Top Q&A Questions & Resources:
- Can you get better technique just by self practice?
- Yes, I mean that’s why I say time repetition and mistakes are going to be your best teachers. I look back at my drawings and I see, you know, notebooks from early on where I had a moment where my brain figured something new out. I was very adamant when I started this, that I actually didn’t want to take classes I wanted to find out what I had in me. While writing a book about it I want to be mindful of that too, you have everything in you that you need. If you kind of sit down and do it you’re going to find the places where you maybe do want to get more instruction because you really want to be able to create in this way or you might find that you’ve got everything you need and you’re happy with, the skills you’ve got at the moment. So yeah, I do think that just skill is the manifestation of repetition. If you keep repeating, you will gain more skills.
- Did you use any resources to help you learn along the way?
- I basically just use time and repetition and mistakes. A lot are instincts, we’re all exposed to a lot of art every day. When you open a magazine or you look at an ad or you watch TV, you’re seeing examples of art and composition and techniques so you’ve got that stored up inside of you and the things that speak to you are there. And because I’m here to chat about my book too, I have to say if you’re interested you can buy a book like mine that’s giving you some tips and techniques.
- Can you recommend the type of paper, or pencils for someone starting out?
- Absolutely. So my sketchbook I have literally hundreds of these at home, it’s Canson. This is five and a half by eight and a half, which means it’s super portable, so I can bring it with me. It is mixed media paper which means I can add water to it and it won’t just disintegrate. When I first started drying, I used their sketch paper which is just a thinner paper. I talked about this in the book too, don’t get hung up on supplies, use what is available, use what feels good to you.
