Kentucky and Dix River Paddle

Paddle about 2.5 miles up the Dix until you come to where the pool of the Kentucky River runs out and there is a small rapid (picture). Can portage around the rapid to another pool that goes up to the Dix Dam that makes Herrington Lake, or just hike around and eat a snack. Very scenic. Lots of palisades, a waterfall. Total distance, around 7 miles. Can extend that by going up the Kentucky River some.
Best when the Kentucky River gauge at Lock 7 is 11 ft. or less, and the Dix River at Dix Dam is less than 500 cfs. They seem to either release about 300cfs or around 1200cfs. Anything higher on the gauge just means the Kentucky is backing up in the Dix higher. You can still make it part way up at 1200cfs, but eventually, the current is as fast as you can paddle. If you catch it just right, you can make it up in the morning at 300cfs, and they'll release starting around 11 or 12 at 1200cfs and you get a really easy paddle back.
Can start from the High Bridge Ramp or Shaker Landing (need waiver and need to know how to get to Landing in off peak hours).
