A Visit to The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum
Saturday, 1/17/26 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM (tentative time)
Together we plan to visit this museum filled with amazingly lifelike wax figures depicting key individuals or scenes of life from African American history. We are waiting to hear if we can attend as an official group with a docent guiding us, but even with a self-led tour this museum is an informative, sometimes proud, sometimes painful look at the history of Black people throughout our country's history.
From their website www.greatblacksinwax.org: The Museum’s mission is to stimulate an interest in African American history by revealing the little-known, often neglected facts of history; using great leaders as role models for youth; improving race relations by dispelling myths of racial inferiority and superiority; supporting and working with community groups, schools, and other organizations to provide opportunities for youth to pursue careers in the museum industry; and promoting economic development in the East North Avenue corridor.
Note: Some exhibits are accessed via stairs. The lynching exhibit, which is one of those, may also be emotionally challenging.
If you want to come, you must sign up no later than Wed. 1/14/26 (as attending on Meetup / by emailing president@bmorethical.org - first option for Meetup info, second one for BES members list) in order to receive detailed instructions and so that we can give the museum an accurate count. Maximum attendees is 20, so sign up now!

Great Blacks in Wax Visit: A Conversation About Race in the US
Sunday, 1/18/26 10:30 AM - noon
We'll begin with a guided discussion among those who visited the Great Blacks in Wax Museum the previous day, then open the floor up for questions and comments by all attending. The museum's displays vary from painful to inspiring, and our reactions to what we've learned and our responses to seeing actual figures as opposed to just drawings or photographs along with the often detailed explanations will be illuminating even for those who did not attend. Although some believe it is best to not teach about painful aspects of our country's histories, many others have found that it is only in facing up to our past that we can truly overcome it. Together we will endeavor to reach a place of compassion and understanding - or at least get a little closer to where we want to be.
