"Bmorethical Poetry Salon" with Kirk Mullen - BES Virtual Sunday Platform

Details

Baltimore Ethical Society Poetry Salon
Kirk Mullen

Note: During the summer, we offer Baltimore Ethical Society members an opportunity to present topics and issues of interest to them. Please enjoy these informal Platforms.

For over two decades, a few members of the Baltimore Ethical Society have been gathering on a monthly basis prior to the platforms, to start their Sunday mornings with poetry. The poetry which has been shared has sometimes been composed by participants within the group and sometimes by "famous and not so famous" poets. We gather to enjoy the beauty of the spoken word. After the reading of the poem, we discuss what the poem evoked in us. Please join us on August 3rd at 10:30 a.m. when the platform will be the BES Poetry Salon. Please bring a poem or two to share with the group.

Biography:
Kirk Mullen is a retired school psychologist and educator who joined the Baltimore Ethical Society in May 1990. Kirk has held the positions of BES Board President (once), Vice President (twice), Secretary (numerous times), as well as At Large Board member (numerous times) over the course of his 35 years of membership in the BES. Also, during that same time period, he has been a member of the Society’s Caring Committee serving approximately 25 non-consecutive years as its Chair. In December 2003 Karen Elliott approached Kirk with the idea of forming a poetry interest group to be lead by Karla Moncero who was getting her Masters Degree in Bibliotherapy. The first meeting of this interest group took place on the first Sunday in January 2004. In May 2006, Karla had completed her degree and moved to Washington state. Kirk Mullen took over the leadership of the poetry group and eventually renamed it the Baltimore Ethical Society’s Poetry Salon. The Baltimore Ethical Society’s Poetry Salon has met every first Sunday of the month since then. Currently, the salon is in its twenty-first year of meeting the literary, cultural, and emotional needs of the members and friends of the Baltimore Ethical Society.
