Maryland is a former slave state that was not part of the confederacy. It also was impacted by norther migration and deindustrialization patterns more akin to Northeastern "Rust Belt" states. This gives Maryland, and by proxy Baltimore, a unique history, which will require unique solutions to achieve racial equity. In this talk, Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle (LBS) Director of Research Lawrence Grandpre will connect Maryland past to our current moment, explaining LBS’s legislative agenda around reparations, criminal justice, and challenging the two party duopoly as a response to Maryland’s unique history of racial inequity.
