Description: In “Safer Without Hopkins Police”, BES members Raven Lane and Emil Volcheck will describe how the Johns Hopkins University Police Department (JHUPD) plans to patrol public streets in Baltimore and why so many in the community oppose this. For the first time in our city, a private, armed police force will hold arrest powers over ordinary citizens, but will operate without the same transparency and accountability required of our public law enforcement agency, the Baltimore Police Department. This threatens civil rights and creates the risk that Johns Hopkins University could be pressured into signing a 287(g) agreement with the Department of Homeland Security to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions. Raven and Emil will describe how activists are working to oppose the JHUPD and offer positive alternatives.

Bios: Raven Lane is the BES Vice-President and Public Relations Committee Chair. Emil Volcheck is a former BES president (2012-2015) and a member of the Abell Improvement Association.
