The legend of Toni Morrison has vaulted her legacy to something of a saintly figure. But falling into worship of the almost mystical stature of her literary career tempts us to miss the fact that Toni Morrison was deeply humanistic in her writing, centering her consistent concern: confronting what threatens to rob of us our humanity and through her characters, show us the struggle and fight to keep it. Christian Hayden with as few spoilers as possible will share, moments, characters, and reflections where Toni Morrison has challenged him to confront the world and himself and become better.
