The Power of Culture in Social Movements
David Rovics
Artist, American Indie Singer/Songwriter
It's well-known to people involved with social movements around the world, throughout history, that, as you can still hear so many people say wherever you go in the Global South, "music is the beating heart of the resistance." But travel around the US today and you will rarely hear activists say anything of the sort. What happened?
David Rovics was raised by classical musicians in the Connecticut suburbs of New York City. For most of his adult life he has been touring and performing his songs of social significance around the world. His songs are streamed on various platforms over 2 million times a year. When not on tour, he lives with his family in Portland, Oregon.
