Did you know that if you’ve been practicing our Korean yoga, you’ve already experienced “tai chi”? The Chinese word TaiChi does not mean "move arms and legs this way and that way" - it means the natural balance of energy. In fact, the name of the black and white symbol that most Americans know as “yin-yang” symbolizes Tai Chi (Taegeuk in Korean).
At Body & Brain, we're all about energy balancing. We don’t teach fighting martial arts, but we do what might be called “healing martial arts.” This practice is for self-healing and self-development, based on Korean martial arts and Qigong (which means "the study of energy").
For beginners, it’s most important for students to learn to feel their own energy and, with more practice, to feel in harmony with the energy around them. You can also improve your balance and posture with continual practice. Developing mindfulness is more important than memorizing how to move your arms and legs in specific forms. That’s why we call it “moving meditation.”
This is mostly a standing class, with a little mat relaxation at the end. Wear loose or stretchy clothing; please wear yoga socks with traction dots on the bottoms, or indoor martial arts shoes (no outdoor shoes please).
Our classes are taught by qualified volunteer instructors, as a community service. We greatly appreciate your $15 per class donation, which helps us pay our rent. If you are a current member of Body & Brain, our classes are covered by your membership.
Looking forward to practicing Tai Chi - Qigong with you!
