What we're about

A book, some coffee and great conversations. Hooked on Books is for everyone who feels a connection to Books and Reading. We read different genres and meet to discuss a new book, to ponder, share our thoughts and talk about the chosen book. Our Meetings are on the second Saturday of the month at 10am.

Our discussions usually last an hour.
Arrive 15 minutes early to grab a coffee, catch up with each other and take in the setting.

There is a bi-annual poll to determine what we'll read for the next six months. The book selection process is simple – members suggest books and vote for the books we want to read for the next six months. Read about our reading journey so far... https://www.meetup.com/bookclub-1148/pages/1575582/The_reading_journey_so_far/

These meetups are fairly relaxed, so if you weren't able to finish the book or haven't had a chance to read it, you are still more than welcome to come to the meeting just to discuss books in general, laugh, share stories and make new friends!

And as Dr. Seuss said,“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn the more places you'll go."....

Separation Anxiety by Laura Zigman

Dollar Tree

Separation Anxiety by Laura Zigman...thank you Debbie for the suggestion!

Synopsis: The light from Zigman’s novel is generated by a kind of literary nuclear fusion: an intense compression of grief and humor. A deliciously absurd tone runs straightthrough this novel about a depressed, middle-aged mother whose career and marriage are flailing. But things start to look up when she begins wearing her 20-pound dog in a baby sling everywhere she goes.

Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler

Dollar Tree

Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler (2020)...thank you Carol for the suggestion!

Synopsis: Micah Mortimer is a creature of habit. A self-employed tech expert, superintendent of his Baltimore apartment building, cautious to a fault behind the steering wheel, he seems content leading a steady, circumscribed life. But one day his routines are blown apart when his woman friend (he refuses to call anyone in her late thirties a “girlfriend”) tells him she’s facing eviction, and then a teenager shows up at Micah’s door claiming to be his son. These surprises, and the ways they throw Micah’s meticulously organized life off-kilter, risk changing him forever. An intimate look into the heart and mind of a man who finds those around him just beyond reach, and a funny, joyful, deeply compassionate story about seeing the world through new eyes, Redhead by the Side of the Road is a triumph, filled with Anne Tyler’s signature wit and keen observation.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Dollar Tree

The Guest List by Lucy Foley...thank you KJ for the suggestion!

Synopsis: The bride ‧ The plus one ‧ The best man ‧ The wedding planner ‧ The bridesmaid ‧ The body

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.

And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Dollar Tree

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman...thank you Debbie for the suggestion!

Synopsis: What a prescient title: In his new novel — after “Beartown” and “A Man Called Ove” — Backman again captures the messy essence of being human, and what it’s like to be pushed to the brink emotionally. “Anxious People” is ripe with dark humor, a layered tragicomedy about a would-be bank robber with six degrees of separation from a motley crew of hostages. It’s clever and affecting, as likely to make you laugh out loud as it is to make you cry.

Hopefully we can meet on the lawn near the Dollar Tree. Be prepared for an online event if the weather doesn't cooperate. For now, plan on meeting outside!
