Discussion: Utopian Media
Clinton Hall, 230 E 51, new york, NY, US# Where Did Utopia Go? A Discussion on Hope, Media, and Society
So much of modern media is built around corruption, dystopia, and disaster, but where are the stories about societies that actually work? Where are the visions of technology that has advanced to actually help humanity?
This discussion group will explore the relative absence of utopian media in contemporary culture— and ask what that absence might reveal about the political, emotional, and social climate we live in today. We’ll talk about questions like:
- Why does dystopia dominate books, TV, film, and online culture?
- Why does utopian storytelling often feel “naive,” “boring,” or hard to imagine?
- Does the lack of utopian imagination limit what people believe is possible in real life?
This will be a casual, thoughtful, and open-ended conversation — part media criticism, part cultural analysis, part political/philosophical reflection.
